Full description
A collection of music composed by musicians who settled in Australia before the beginning of the 20th Century. Richard Divall, editor of the Australian Music Series, has produced modern editions through editing the unpublished manuscripts of early Australian composers: Carl Linger (1810-1862), Fritz Hart (1874-1949), John Delany (1852-1907) and Charles Horsely (1822-1876). Each edition has an MDA number and includes at least a one page facsimile from the original manuscript. Some manuscripts are held in music libraries but for many others the original manuscripts have now disappeared. Fortunately photocopies of the manuscripts were organised by Richard around 1968 for the ABC’s Musica Australis project. These photocopies are now held in the National Library of Australia.

Significance statement
This collection is significant because the manuscripts of the composers are either lost or difficult to access. Newspaper reports indicate that many compositions were produced during the period but a large amount of the music has been lost since its composition and original performance.
