The Australian Bureau of Statistics, Victoria, a Commonwealth Government agency, was established under the Australian Bureau of Statistics Act 1975. Its predecessor was the Commonwealth Bureau of Census and Statistics, Victoria (1957-1974). The Commonwealth Bureau of Census and Statistics, Victoria took over the census and statistics function in Victoria from the Victorian Government Department of the Treasury Statistics Branch in 1957.

Under the Commonwealth Census and Statistics Act passed in 1905, the Commonwealth Bureau of Census and Statistics (established in 1906) was responsible, broadly speaking, for the collection and analysis of statistics, and the dissemination of certain information nationally and internationally.
