From the Voyage Leader's Report:Voyage 6 conducted an intensive oceanographic study of the Sub-Antarctic Zone in Southern Ocean heat and water transports, air-sea gas exchange, primary productivity, ecosystem structure, and carbon export to the deep sea.The study forms part of the Australian Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS) program. It was a three way expedition in conjunction with the Antarctic Cooperative Research Centre, the CSIRO Division of Marine Research and the Antarctic Division. Two ships took part - RSV Aurora Australis and the Southern Surveyor.The cruise consisted basically of two main components: a north-south transect from 42 to 55 S along 141 degrees, 45 minutes E and 4 on-site Process Stations undertaken in four different oceanographic regions: the Sub-Tropical Convergence, Sub-Antarctic Zone, Sub-Antarctic Front and the Polar Frontal Zone. Continuous sampling was made from the underway clean seawater supply.During the transect a wide range of chemical and biological samples were taken. These will be now analysed to construct a detailed picture of water column stratification, seasonal nutrient utilisation and phytoplankton community structure.Each station was generally characterised by an initial sampling and incubation start-up period when trace-metal free water pumping, multiple CTD/Niskin casts, snatcher casts, radiometer dips, submersible and in-situ particle pumping, and the deployment of free-floating sediment traps occurred. This was followed by mooring work where the sinking particle trap moorings were recovered and additional casts done such as kevlar/polycarbonate bottle trace-metal casts. The floating traps served as the reference point for these casts. Where data for a particular sensor do not exist for a particular time, the last known value is used unless the sensor has been disabled or has encountered an error. For example, some sensors only record data every minute, but the resolution for the underway dataset is 10 seconds, so the same value will be used 6 times a minute. No averages are taken for sensors that capture data at a rate other than every 10 seconds. This dataset contains the underway data collected during the Aurora Australis Voyage 6 1997-98. This was a dedicated marine science cruise researching Subantarctic oceanography.
