Full description

This dataset contains the underway data from Voyage 5 1996-97 (BRAD) of the Aurora Australis. This was a manned marine science cruise. The main project was to conduct seismic, benthic and geological survey of Vincennes Bay, MacRobertson Shelf, Nilsen Basin, Iceberg Alley and Prydz Bay. Voyage Leader, Marine Science Support Data Quality, Tide Gauge and Engineer's Reports are available via the Related URL section.

CTD data were also obtained.

The voyage leader's report listed the following scientific objectives:

1) Transfer passengers and cargo at Casey, for programs including research, hydrography, AWS, and station fresh produce etc.
2) Conduct high resolution seismic and coring program in Vincennes Bay, approximately 340 nm as part of the principal voyage determining project "Shelf and slope sedimentary signatures of Late Cenozic icesheet variability on the East Antarctic continental margin".
3) Deploy field party by helicopter to Gaussberg.
4) Search for upward looking sonars of glaciology program at 68 degrees, 8.32 minutes S, 76 degrees 1.98 minutes E and 66 degrees 15.31 S, 77 degrees 2.74 minutes E.
5) Conduct part 2 of seismic/coring program in Prydz Bay (approximately 994 nm), especially the Trough Mouth Fan centred on 67 degrees S, 72 degrees E, including ODP site survey work.
6) Conduct benthic dredge program for the project, "Biodiversity and biogeography of benthic and benthopelagic invertebrates on the continental shelf in eastern Antarctica".
7) Conduct part 3 of the seismic/coring program, concentrating on the Nielsen Basic area of the Mac.Robertson Shelf.
8) Proceed to Heard Island for tide gauge retrieval and deployment, aerial photography and AWS program, and various other smaller projects. Subsidiary reconnaissance for illegal fishing vessels. Along the way, deploy two meteorological buoys.
