Full description
The First Large Absorption Survey in HI (FLASH) is a wide-field survey for the redshifted 21-cm line of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) seen in absorption againstbackground radio continuum sources. FLASH covers the frequency range from 712 to 1000 MHz, corresponding to a redshift range from z = 0.4 to 1.0 for HI. With a look-back time of 4 to 8 Gyr, FLASH probes a cosmic epoch where our current knowledge of the amount of HI in and around galaxies is patchy and incomplete. The full FLASH survey will cover at least 24,000 square degrees of sky and is expected to detect several hundred associated and intervening HI absorption systems. A full description of the survey is given by Allison et al. 2022 (PASA 39, e010).
