Archibald Henry Simpson was born on 1 October 1843 in London. He was educated at Tunbridge School, Kent. He graduated with a B.A (1865), and M.A (1868) from Christ’s College, Cambridge. He was a fellow of the College from 1865 to 1882. Simpson was called to the Lincoln’s Inn Bar in 1868. (1)

He arrived in Sydney in 1881, and appears to have been admitted to the Bar in that year. He developed a practice specialising in equity, probate, and bankruptcy law. (2) He was appointed a puisne judge to the Supreme Court of New South Wales on 21 November 1896. Simpson was appointed Chief Judge in Equity to the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 1898. Simpson retired on 31 December 1917. (3)

Simpson was a member of the Senate, and Vice Chancellor of the University of Sydney from 1902 to 1904.

Simpson married Alice Goldie on 15 January 1885 in Sydney. He died on 2 October 1918 in Sydney. (4)
