Researchers: Miss Emily Furlong (Future Fellowship)

Brief description Exploiting bacterial nickel dependence for antibacterial agent discovery. Nickel is important for the ability of bacteria to cause disease. This project aims to provide a detailed understanding of how nickel is imported into bacterial cells and will generate new knowledge about how nickel and other metals are transported across cell membranes. Other expected outcomes of this work include enhanced national capacity in advanced microscopy and membrane protein methods through training of emerging researchers. By investigating novel antibacterial targets, this work could lead to the future development of new antibacterial therapies, delivering economic and social benefits across healthcare, agriculture, and biotechnology sectors.
