Brief description Breaking Barriers: Establishing blue carbon as a natural climate solution. This project aims to establish ‘blue carbon’ – carbon captured and stored by coastal wetland ecosystems – as a natural climate solution. This project expects to break through knowledge barriers in social, governance, finance, and market domains that currently limit blue carbon projects. Expected outcomes include improved understanding of landholder amenability; new data on risks and benefits; arrangements for equitable benefit sharing; financial frameworks to improve marketability; and support tools to guide decisions. This should provide significant benefits to the lives and livelihoods of coastal communities and help meet Australia’s commitment to incorporating blue carbon into its climate change, biodiversity, and economic strategies.
