Brief description

The concentration of chlorophyll was analysed from satellite images collected by using the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) sensor on the Envisat satellite, over the period 2004-2006 to understand the spatial and temporal aspects of algal blooms that occurred in the enclosed and semi-enclosed bays of the South China Sea in the Pearl River Estuary region. The ocean colour data obtained by processing the MERIS images in BEAM and the EnviView program was used to derive chlorophyll (Chl.) concentration to elucidate seasonal factors affecting the spatial and temporal distribution and abundance of algal blooms.

Statement: Out of the twenty four MERIS images (one for each month), the images with cloud free areas which were usable were at station 1, station 6, station 10 and station 16. These images were analysed to find the chlorophyll concentration and hence the number of cells to determine the algal bloom.
Statement: The MERIS instrument was used to measure the sea colour in the oceans and in coastal areas. The sea colour image was converted into a measurement of chlorophyll pigment concentration, suspended sediment concentration, dissolved yellow substances and of aerosol loads over the marine domain.
Statement: The BEAM application suite was used to facilitate the utilisation, viewing and processing of the MERIS data products. Purpose
To monitor and define the algal blooms causing red tides which are responsible for massive fish kills and thereby serious economic loss in the Pearl River Estuary region of south China, particularly during the summer and fall seasons.
