The decision to establish a gaol at Albury was possibly in response to the increasing importance of the town and the fact that both Courts of General and Quarter Sessions and District Courts were held there at least since 1860. The first reference to Albury Gaol appears to be an entry in the 'Blue Book' for 1861 which quotes a daily salary for an Acting Gaoler and a Warder, the latter dating from 1 March, 1861. (1) The following 'blue book' shows Michael Tiernan as Gaoler and Martha Tiernan as Matron, both appointments dating from 3 February, 1862, and an establishment including a turnkey and four warders all paid 6/- per day. (2) The NSW Government Gazette carries a notice from the Colonial Secretary dated 29 January, 1862 advising that Daniel Tiernan is appointed Gaoler and Mrs Tiernan Matron at Albury Gaol (3) Albury Gaol was a minor gaol, used for short-sentence prisoners from the local district. Albury ceased to be a prison on 14 June, 1943 (4) FOOTNOTES (1).
