Alberton Primary School (School No. 1; previously known as Alberton National School 1858-1862, Alberton Common School 1862-c.1872, Alberton State School c.1872-c.1970)

Located in Alberton in Wellington Shire, Gippsland, Alberton Primary School has been in continuous operation for over 150 years. It first opened as a National School in 1858 in a schoolhouse made of wattle and daub, with heavy galvanised iron on the outer walls. Enrolment at the time was 43.
In 1862, the Victorian Parliament abolished the two existing centralised boards and created a single Board of Education (VA 713) through the Common Schools Act.  With the passing of this act, the school was re-named Alberton Common School and was given the number 1.  

The size of the school grounds was increased by two acres in 1863, and by a further acre in both 1917 and 1949.
The Education Act of 1872 established the Victorian Education Department (VA 714) which marked further change to school naming conventions, with the school becoming Alberton State School. The school number was retained.
In 1891-1892 a brick schoolhouse was built to replace the old building. By the 1950s it had fallen into disrepair and a series of repairs were carried out. Despite this, the brick building was condemned in 1967 and replaced by a new timber construction.

In 1970, there was a statewide decision to change the use of the term ‘State School’ to refer to all primary, secondary and technical schools instead of just primary schools, and for all primary schools to use ‘Primary School’ in the name. Accordingly, the school’s name was changed to Alberton Primary School. 
In 2009 the school was completely rebuilt, adding a new Science/Art building and a new modular building used for Music.

As of 2023 there was an enrolment of 85.

Alberton Primary School is still in operation as of 2025.
