Alan Hutchings is a qualified town planner and a Life Fellow of the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA). He holds a Masters degree in planning history from the University of Adelaide. Alan commenced his working life in the 1950s as a survey cadet in the Department of Lands, the successor organization to the colonial Surveyor General's Office and retired as a fulltime Commissioner of South Australia's Environment, Resources and Development Court in 2001. He was then appointed Adjunct Senior Research Fellow in urban and regional planning at the University of South Australia. Prior to his Judicial appointment in 1989, Alan held senior planning positions in the state government, including as planning director for the Monarto Development Commission, and as a consultant. He has published widely in urban design, planning policy and history and he edited With Conscious Purpose: a history of town planning in South Australia (2nd edition 2007, PIA, Adelaide).
