This school was opened on 29 November 1875 as Kellalac State School No. 1536. The primary school was located on land owned by Head Teacher Alexander Kennedy in the Werrigar district.

The school was later known as Werrigar, and then changed in 1909 to Ailsa, the name that Kennedy had given the area.

Due to the financial crisis of the 1890s the school operated on a part-time basis with Kellalac State School No. 1945.

The school closed in 1948 due to low enrolment. It reopened in 1957. Ailsa Primary School closed permanently in 1971.
