Full description

The Nurses Education Board of New South Wales was constituted under the Nurses Education Board Act, 1973 (No.29, 1973). (1) The Board was comprised of ten to twelve members. (2) One member of the Board was to be a member of the Nurses Registration Board nominated by the Minister for Health (3) and the remaining members were persons with experience in nursing, education, medicine, health or administration appointed by the minister after consultation with appropriate persons and/or bodies. (4) The functions of the Board were as follows: * to plan, in collaboration with the Health Commission of New South Wales, the Nurses Registration Board and the Minister, an integrated program of development for nurse education in New South Wales; * To initiate and maintain liaison with bodies providing educational courses for nurses, with the Nurses registration Board and with the Health Commission of New South Wales; * To stimulate the provision of courses in nurse education in appropriate institutions; and * To foster research into matters relevant to the development and improvement of nurse education. (5) The Board was permitted to establish Committees to assist in the performance of any of its functions. (6) The NSW Government Gazette of 29 June 1973 published the proclamation of the Nurses Education Act from 1 July 1973 (7) and the members of the first Nurses Education Board. (8) With the transfer of nurse education from hospitals to colleges of advanced education in 1985, the Board had largely fulfilled its charter. It was formally abolished with the repeal of the Nurses Education Board Act by the Statute Law (Miscellaneous Provision) (No.3) Act (No.131, 1988).
