Full description

In 1911 the Department of Attorney General and of Justice was divided into two branches: the Justice Branch and the Attorney General's Branch (1). The Justice Branch was responsible for the Equity Office; the Bankruptcy Office; Sheriff's Office; Probate and Interstate Estates Office; Registrar General's Office; Courts of Petty Sessions; Registrars of District Courts; Coroners; Goal and Penal Establishments; matters relating to the commutation or remission of sentences, or of fines, forfeitures, and estreats; and control of the Court Houses (2).

While the general thrust of departmental responsibility remained unchanged, there was some alteration in the subordinate offices over time. These included the removal of Corrective Services in the years 1978 to 1991 and from 1995 onwards. The Police Department was subordinate to Justice Department in the years 1974 and 1975 and the Registrar General was removed in 1975.
