Full description

The Mining Act, 1874 (37 vice. no.13), constituted a Mining Board of up to 11 members . Two members (not Mining Wardens) were appointed by the Governor, and up to nine holders of miner's rights, gold mining leases or business licenses from the various mining districts filled the other positions . (1) The Board was instructed to devise regulations to resolve specific mining issues, (2) such as: * the cutting, construction, use and maintenance of race dams and reservoirs included on Crown Land; * the time and mode of taking possession of forfeited or abandoned claims, of registering such claims; * the regulation of construction and materials and strength of embankments of dams and reservoirs used or to be constructed; and * the bailing of water from mines as to prevent injury to any mining workings.
