The Municipalities Act of 1867 (31 Vic. No.12) provided for the constitution of a Municipality on the receipt of at least fifty potential municipal tax payers within the area proposed to be incorporated. (1) A petition of 109 persons was received in support of a Municipality of Gunnedah and, on 17 September 1885, the Governor proclaimed the constitution of the Municipal District of Gunnedah. The proclamation was gazetted on 19 September 1885. (2)
On 9 June 1937 the boundaries of Gunnedah Municipality were altered with a part transferred to Liverpool Plains Shire. (3)
In October 1954, the Liverpool Plains Shire Council and Gunnedah Municipal Council each resolved to join in the preparation of a town and country planning scheme. The resolutions received ministerial approval on 6 December 1957. (4)
From 1 January 1963 part of Liverpool Plains Shire that was referenced in the planning scheme was transferred to Gunnedah Municipality. (5) On 18 August 1965 it was proclaimed that the land that was transferred from 1 January 1963 was deemed to have ceased to be part of Liverpool Plains from 12 October 1954. (6)
On 1 January 1980 the Municipality of Gunnedah was dissolved when it was unified with the Shire of Liverpool Plains to form the Shire of Gunnedah. (7)
