Full description
Milson Island Place of Detention was proclaimed on 21 March 1973 as a prison on 76 acres of Milson Island, also known as Mud Island. (1) Milson Island Place of Detention was also referred to as Milson Island Detention Centre.
As of 30 June 1979, Milson Island Detention Centre held 91 inmates. (2)
On 9 June 1981 Milson Island ceased to operate as a prison establishment. The decision to close the prison was based on the need for extensive refurbishment of the facilities, the island’s inherent unsuitability for use as a prison, especially in relation to security and the availability of more suitable accommodation for low security prisoners at other institutions. The responsibility for Milson Island was transferred to the Department of Sport and Recreation. (3)
