Hornsby Shire Council was established by proclamation on 7 March 1906. (1)
The Shire exchanged areas of land with the Municipality of Ku-ring-gai on 25 October, 1996 (2), and Council amalgamations in May 2016 saw areas of Epping, which had been part of Hornsby Shire, amalgamate with the new City of Parramatta. (3)
