The Department of Premier and Cabinet provided policy, project and administrative support in relation to the Veterans' Affairs portfolio that was created in January 2009. In 2009 it established the Premier's ANZAC Memorial Scholarship Program, provided support to the ANZAC Memorial Building, and distributed grants for the repair and restoration of community war memorials. The Office for Veterans' Affairs was transferred from the Department of Premier and Cabinet to the Department of Education and Communities on 4 April 2011 where it became part of the Office of Communities. (2)
On 1 July 2014 the Office for Veterans' Affairs was transferred from the Department of Education and Communities to the Department of Premier and Cabinet. (3)
On 1 April 2017 the persons employed in the Department of Premier and Cabinet who were principally involved in the administration of legislation allocated to the Minister for Veterans Affairs (including the provision of support for the portfolio responsibilities of the Minister for Veterans Affairs) were transferred to the Department of Justice, so the Office of Veterans Affairs joined the Department of Justice. On 1 July 2019 when the Department of Family and Community Services joined with the Department of Justice, Veterans Affairs became part of the Department of Communities and Justice. (5)
The Office for Veterans Affairs (OVA) managed state programs commemorating and assisting veterans and their families in collaboration with all NSW Government agencies, the Australian Government and community stakeholders. The Office also led heritage and commemoration activities, and targeted programs and grants that support veterans to access employment and education opportunities that are critical for long-term wellbeing.
