On 1 July 2014, the Office of Sport was established as an executive agency related to the Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPC) and the divisions and entities within the Minister for Sport and Recreation's portfolio were transferred to DPC. This included the Sport and Recreation Division, Sport Corporate and Administrative Support Branch, Venues NSW, Sydney Olympic Park Authority and the Office of Penrith Lakes. (1)
The Office of Sport was the lead NSW Government agency for sport and active recreation. The Office of Sport aimed to increase the levels of physical activity of the people of NSW by providing the leadership, policies, programs, funding and infrastructure necessary to enable higher rates of participation in sport and active recreation. (2)
The persons employed in the Institute of Sport Staff Agency were transferred to the Office of Sport at the abolition of the staff agency on 2 September 2015. (3)
On 7 October 2016 the Office of Penrith Lakes was transferred from the Office of Sport to the Department of Planning and Environment. (4)
The Office was transferred to the Department of Industry on 1 April 2017. On the same date, the Institute of Sport Staff Agency was re-established and staff employed in the Office of Sport for the NSW Institute of Sport were transferred to the Institute of Sport Staff Agency. (5)
On 1 July 2019, at the abolition of the Department of Industry, the Office and Venues NSW were transferred to the Department of Communities and Justice. Staff employed in the administration of the Sydney Olympic Park Authority moved to the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment. (6)
Venues NSW Staff Agency was re-constituted on 1 December 2020 removing the staff of the Venues NSW division from the Office. (7)
By 2020 the Office consisted of the following core divisions: Office of the Chief Executive Group, Policy and Planning Group, Regional Delivery Group, Combat Sports Authority and the State Sporting Venues Authority. (8)
In 2020, the Office owned and operated 10 Sport and Recreation Centres across NSW and was responsible for the management of several Olympic Sport Venues outside of the Sydney Olympic Park precinct including Sydney International Regatta Centre, Sydney International Equestrian Centre, Sydney International Shooting Centre and Dunc Gray Velodrome. On 1 April 2022, the Office of Sport joined the Department of Enterprise, Investment and Trade. (10)
From 5 April 2023, the Office of Sport was transferred into the Department of Communities and Justice. (11)
From 1 July 2024, the Office of Sport was transferred into the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism, Hospitality and Sport. (12)
