The Local Government (Shires) Act, 1905 provided for the division of the whole state (exclusive of existing municipalities) into shires, to determine their boundaries and to name them. (1)

In accordance with this, the Shire of Nepean (Shire No. 120) was proclaimed on 7 March 1906. (2)

In May of 1906, the Nepean Shire was divided into three ridings, in accordance with the Local Government (Shires) Act, 1905 (3).

From 1 July 1913, under the Local Government Act, 1906, the Municipality of Mulgoa and the shire of Nepean were reconstituted into one shire and named the Nepean Shire. (4)

The Nepean Shire was abolished on 1 January 1949 under the Local Government (Areas) Act, 1948. The “A” Riding added to the Municipality of Penrith, the “B” Riding added to the Municipality of Liverpool, and the “C” Riding added to the Municipality of Camden. (5)
