Full description

On 1 July 2019, the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) was formed when the former Department of Family and Community Services (FACS) and Department of Justice amalgamated. The Countering Violent Extremism Division in the Department of Premier and Cabinet was also transferred. (1) DCJ was the lead agency in the new Stronger Communities Cluster. The cluster brought together NSW Government services aimed at achieving safe, just, inclusive and resilient communities. (2)

In 2020, the DCJ Stronger Communities cluster divisions were: Courts, Tribunals and Service Delivery; Corrective Services NSW; Child Protection and Permanency; District and Youth Justice Services; Strategy, Policy and Commissioning; Housing, Disability and District Services; Law Reform and Legal Services; and Corporate Services NSW. (3)

In 2022, The department was made up of: Child Protection and Permanency, District and Youth Justice Services; Corporate Services; Corrective Services NSW; Courts, Tribunals and Service Delivery; Housing, Disability and District Services; Law Reform and Legal Services; Strategy, Policy and Commissioning; and Transforming Aboriginal Outcomes. (4)

As of September 2022 the separate statutory agencies and executive agencies within DJC were: Judicial Commission of NSW; Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions; Legal Aid NSW; Office of the Children’s Guardian; John Williams Memorial Trust; Home Purchase Assistance Fund; Registrar of Community Housing; NSW Police Force and NSW Crime Commission. The independent bodies of DJC included Resilience NSW, Fire and Rescue NSW, NSW State Emergency Service, NSW Rural Fire Service, Crown Solicitor’s Office and Multicultural NSW. (5)

At the abolition of Resilience NSW on 16 December 2022, the staff involved in the Welfare Services Branch were transferred to Department of Communities and Justice. (6)
