Full description
On 1 January 1980 Gunnedah Shire was constituted with the unification of the Municipality of Gunnedah and the Shire of Liverpool Plains. The previous councils were dissolved, and the new Gunnedah Shire Council was formed with a provisional council consisting of 12 councillors. (1)
The first election of the new Council was held on 30 May 1981. (2)
The boundaries of Gunnedah Shire were altered on 2 September 1992 with part of the Shire of Gunnedah transferred to the Shire of Coonabarabran. (3) From 7 October 1992 the boundaries of the Shire were altered with part of the Shire of Narrabri transferred to the Shire of Gunnedah. (4)
On 10 April 2013 Part of Gunnedah Shire (area of 318ha) was transferred to Liverpool Plains Shire while part of Liverpool Plains Shire (area of 1.2ha) and part of Warrumbungle Shire (area of 787ha) were added to Gunnedah Shire. (5)
