The University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) was established on 26 January 1988 by the University of Technology, Sydney Act 1987 and the University of Technology, Sydney (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1987. (1) UTS was an amalgamation of the former New South Wales Institute of Technology and the Design School of the Sydney College of the Arts which was incorporated into the Institute on 25 January 1988. (2)

The functions of the University included:
(a) the provision of education facilities at university standard and of professional and advanced education courses;
(b) the provision of courses of study, at Sydney or elsewhere, for part-time or evening students in all fields of study offered by the University;
(c) the provision of courses of study at levels of attainment which the Council considers appropriate to meet the requirements of technology, business, science, industry and design;
(d) the dissemination and increase of knowledge and the promotion of scholarship through continuing education, pure and applied research and development activities, consulting, technology transfer and management; and
(e) the conferring of diplomas and the degrees of Bachelor, Master and Doctor and the issuing of such certificates as the by-laws may prescribe. (3)

UTS was established with a Council and Convocation. The Council was consisted of parliamentary members; official members; appointed members; elected student and elected non-student members. (4)

On 23 May 1989, the University of Technology, Sydney Act 1987 was repealed and replaced with the University of Technology Sydney Act 1989. (5) The interim Council for the new Act commenced 1 September 1989 to be concluded on 31 August 1990 but was extended until 30 November 1990. (6)

On 1 January 1990, the Institute of Technical and Adult Teacher Education and the Kuring-gai College of Advanced Education were amalgamated with the existing University of Technology, Sydney under the Higher Education (Amalgamation) Act 1989. (7)

In 2005, under the University of Technology, Sydney By-law 2005, changes were made to Council member elections. (8)

In 2006, UTS held nine faculties: Business; Design, Architecture and Building; Education; Engineering; Humanities and Social Sciences; Information Technology; Law; Nursing, Midwifery and Health; and Science. (9)

By December 2015, the comma had been removed from the University's title now known as the University of Technology Sydney. (10)

In 2022, UTS' seven faculties were Arts and Social Science; UTS Business School; Design, Architecture and Building; Engineering and Information Technology; Health; Law; and Science.(11)
