The City of Greater Wollongong was constituted on 24 September 1947 by the amalgamation of the Shires of Bulli and Central Illawarra and the Municipalities of North Illawarra and Wollongong. (1)
In 1970, Queen Elizabeth II granted the title of Lord Mayor to the city (2)
On 21 October 1970, the alteration of the name of the City of Greater Wollongong to the City of Wollongong was proclaimed. (3)
