The Municipality of Kiama (Kiama Municipal Council) was created on 13 August 1859 incorporating three wards: Kiama, Gerringong and Jamberoo. (1)
On 24 April 1871, Gerringong Ward separated from the Kiama Municipality to form the Municipal District of Gerringong and the Municipal District of Broughton's Vale. The remaining wards of Kiama and Jamberoo were then constituted as a Municipality under the name The Borough of Kiama (Kiama Borough Council). (2) On 29 May 1872 the municipality was divided into three wards, Kiama Ward, Southern Ward and Jamberoo Ward. (3)
On 30 October 1890, an area was separated from Kiama to form the Borough of East Kiama, while the Borough of Kiama was divided into two wards, Jamberoo Ward and Southern Ward. (4) On 16 March 1892, under the Kiama and East Kiama Boroughs' Re-naming Act of 1892 (55 Vic. No.21) the Boroughs of Kiama and East Kiama were renamed Jamberoo (Jamberoo Borough Council) and Kiama (Kiama Borough Council) respectively. (5)
From 1 July 1954, the Gerringong, Jamberoo and Kiama municipalities were amalgamated to form the new Municipality of Kiama (Kiama Municipal Council). (6)
