Full description
Caldwell Provisional School in County Cadell opened in January 1945 and continued as a provisional school until November 1957. (1) Provisional schools were elementary schools established in areas where there were fewer than the 20 students required to establish a public school. From 1945 the establishment of a provisional school required a minimum of 9 students. The Department may have provided all or part of the cost of the buildings, but well into the twentieth century parents often met most of the cost. The schools were generally staffed by untrained teachers or by teachers of the lowest classification. Gradually they became in effect simply small public schools. In November 1957 all remaining provisional schools were converted to public schools. (2)
From November 1957 the school became Caldwell Public School until its closure in December 1987. (3) From November 1957 a public school required a minimum of 9 students. (4)
There was a previous school at Caldwell from 1928 to 1932. (5)
