Full description
Under the provisions of the Local Government (Shires) Act 1905, the Shire of Berrigan was proclaimed on 7 March 1906. The boundary descriptions were as follows: "Commencing at the junction of the western boundary of the parish of Wonnue, county of Townsend, with the Murray River; and bounded thence by that boundary generally northerly to Tuppal Creek ; by that creek easterly to the western boundary of the county of Denison ; by that boundary northerly and its northern boundary easterly to the eastern boundary of the parish of Momolong; by the boundaries dividing the parishes of Momolong, Warmatta, Kilnyana, Carlyle, and Boomanoomana from Narrow Plains, Savernake, Wahgunyah, and Mulwala and its prolongation generally southerly to the south bank of the Murray River; by that bank of that river downwards to a point south of the point of commencement; and by a line north to that point." Part of the Shire of Berrigan was transferred to the Shire of Conargo on 19 December 1912. (2)
Consisting predominantly of irrigated rural land the Berrigan Shire was in the southern Riverina. Agriculture, transport and tourism formed the basis of its income. The Berrigan Shire was located to the north of the Murray River half way between Albury and Echuca less than a three-hour drive from Melbourne. The Council boundaries encompass the towns of Barooga, Berrigan, Finley and Tocumwal. (3)
