Lands in the Yanco Irrigation Area were constituted as a shire, named the Shire of Willimbong, on 6 January 1928 under section 20 of the Irrigation Act 1912 (Act No.73, 1912) as if the shire were constituted in accordance with the provisions of the Local Government Act 1919 (Act No.40, 1919). (1)
The Shire of Willimbong was renamed the Shire of Leeton on 19 July 1946. (2)
