Full description

The Ashfield Children's Court was established by the Child Welfare Act, 1939. The role of the Court was to hear and determine cases of offences committed by or against children. The Ashfield Childrens' Court was established with jurisdiction in the Metropolitan Police District and the Police District of Parramatta on 24 April 1946. (1)

Under provisions 84 and 87 of the Child Welfare Act 1939, Ashfield Children's Court became a court of review on 24 July 1974. (2)

From 9 July 1976 the court situated at 185 Parramatta Road, Haberfield and commonly referred to as Ashfield Children's Court was to be known as Yasmar Children's Court. (3)

Under the Children's Court Act 1987 (Act No.53, 1987) Yasmar Children's Court, Parramatta Road, Haberfield was proclaimed on 15 January 1988 as a place at which any Magistrate sitting may exercise the jurisdiction of the Children's Court of New South Wales. (4) This proclamation was revoked with effect from 27 April 1992, in effect removing Yasmar as a place where the jurisdiction of the Children's Court may be exercised. (5)
