Full description

The Municipal District of Strathfield was proclaimed on 2 June 1885. (1)

It was formed under the Municipalities Act of 1867 (31 Vic. Act No.12) which provided for the subdivision of existing municipalities into boroughs and districts as well as the constitution of new municipalities. (2)

The District included the localities of Redmire, Druitt Town and Homebush. Redmire was renamed Strathfield in 1885. (3) Druitt Town was renamed Strathfield South in 1891. (4)

The Municipal District of Strathfield boundaries incorporated Redmire Boulevarde in the east, to Cooks River and Liverpool Road in the south and northwards to the Great Southern Railway. (5)

Flemington was incorporated into the Municipality of Strathfield on 16 February 1892. (6)

On 31 December 1906 the Municipal District of Strathfield became the Municipality of Strathfield. Under the Local Government Extension Act, 1906 (Act No.40, 1906) the terms ‘municipal district’ and ‘borough’ ceased to be used. (7)

The Municipality of Homebush was merged with the Municipality of Strathfield in 1947. (8)

The West ward of Enfield Municipal Council was amalgamated with the Municipality of Strathfield on 1 January 1949. (9)

Further boundary exchanges occurred between the Municipality of Strathfield and Bankstown on 2 October 1953. Land was passed to the Municipality of Concord on 22 December 1972 and the Municipality of Bankstown on 19 July 1985. (10)

In 1992 a section of the northern part of Strathfield Municipality was transferred to Auburn Council. In return, land between Boundary Creek and the railway line was transferred from Auburn to Strathfield Council. (11)

In January 2016 the Minister for Local Government referred a proposal to amalgamate several councils, including the merger of Strathfield Council with the councils of Ashfield, Burwood, Canada Bay, Leichhardt and Marrickville, to the Office of Local Government as a function of reviewing the Local Government Act 1993 (Act No. 70, 1993). (12) Strathfield Council was not included in this amalgamation process.
