Full description
The Penrith Municipality was declared by proclamation on 31 May, 1871. (1)
The Penrith Municipality was declared the City of Penrith on 14 November 1959 after a successful application from the Council to the Department of Local Government. (2) Under the Local Government Act, 1919 (No. 41, 1919) a municipality could be proclaimed a city if it met the criteria of maintaining a population of 20,000 or more, averaged a gross income of £20,000 and was an independent centre of population and not a suburb of any other area. (3)
In 1963, the City of Penrith was divided into three wards instead of four, North, South and East, implemented at the Triennial Council election in that year. (4) In October 1963, boundary changes occurred when Emu Plains was transferred from Blue Mountains City Council to Penrith City Council. (5)
In 1984, land was removed from Penrith City and transferred to Fairfield City. (6)
A proposal from Penrith City Council was accepted when, in June 1990, a parcel of land was transferred from Hawkesbury City to Penrith City. (7)
