Full description

The Sydney Police Station was part of the Sydney Police Centre (SPC), Surry Hills which officially opened on 11 March 1987 and was '...the major receiving centre for offenders apprehended in the City of Sydney area'. (1)  The police station was intended to replace Central Police Station [Liverpool Street].(2)  The station operated alongside the Surry Hills Police Station, also located in the SPC.(3)

Relocating the police station for the City of Sydney to the SPC was part of a major structural change in the NSW Police Force.  Changes included centralised mobile police units which operated from the SPC supported by '...Foot Patrol Police attached to satellite stations at Kings Cross, Redfern, Central and The Rocks. Such change has led to the closure of Darlinghurst and Regent Street Police Stations'. (4) A pilot scheme to reduce the number of charging stations was also implemented.(5) 

In November 1990, the '...Central and Darling Harbour Patrols were amalgamated ... to form the City of Sydney Patrol resulting in significant consolidation of resources'.(6) Changes to reporting structures meant that Sydney Police Station was part of Metropolitan District Central “A” (1987-1990), then South Region (1990-1991).(6)

It is not known when Sydney Police Station closed but the station was no longer in operation by late 2014.(7)
