On 1 January 1949, under the Local Government (Areas) Act 1948 (Act No.30, 1948) the former Municipality of Rockdale was amalgamated with the Municipality of Bexley to form a new body also named the Municipality of Rockdale. (1) Bexley became the First Ward, returning six aldermen, and Rockdale became the Second Ward, returning nine aldermen. (2)
The ward structure of Rockdale was altered in 1950 to five numbered wards, from First to Fifth. (3) Ward boundaries were adjusted in 1969 (4) and 1971 (5), although the number of wards remained constant to 2015. (6)
The boundaries of Rockdale were adjusted in 1966, with the addition of reclaimed land. (7) Parts of the Municipality of Rockdale were transferred to the Municipality of Kogarah in January 1969. (8)
On 22 February 1995, Rockdale was constituted as the City of Rockdale under section 206 of the Local Government Act 1993 (Act No.30, 1993). (9)
On 9 September 2016 the areas of Rockdale City Council and Botany City Council were amalgamated to form Bayside Council and Rockdale City Council was dissolved. (10)
