Full description

Destination NSW (DNSW) was established on 1 July 2011, under section 4 of the Destination NSW Act 2011 (Act No. 21, 2011) when the operations of Tourism NSW, Events NSW, the Homebush Motor Racing Authority and the Greater Sydney Partnership, were merged. (1)

The key objective of Destination NSW was to support growth in the state's tourism and events sectors. The agency was deemed a statutory authority under the Destination NSW Act. (2)

From 1 July 2011 the Tourism New South Wales Act, 1984 (Act No. 46, 1984) was repealed. (3)

Destination NSW was responsible for promoting tourism and acquiring and developing major sporting and cultural events for Sydney and Regional NSW. In addition, DNSW was the major investor in Business Events Sydney with the aim to secure more international conventions, incentive travel reward programs, corporate events and exhibitions for Sydney and Regional NSW. (4)

Destination NSW was structured with a Board of Management, consisting of a Chairperson appointed by the Minister, a Chief Executive Officer, and representatives with relevant skills and experience in tourism and events appointed by the Minister and the Director-General of the Department of Trade and Investment, Regional Infrastructure and Services or that person's nominee. (5)

In 2011 the administrative structure comprised four divisions: Events, Homebush Motor Racing Authority, Corporate Services and Tourism. (6)

In 2012 the agency's structure consisted of the following program areas: Event Development, Marketing, Industry Partnership and Government Policy, Communications, Corporate Services, and Homebush Motor Racing Authority. (7) In 2013 Corporate Services was renamed Corporate Operations. (8)

From July 2015, Destination NSW reported to the Department of Premier and Cabinet when the Department of Trade and Investment, Regional Infrastructure and Services was abolished. (9)

The functions of Destination NSW were:
(a) to market and promote New South Wales as a tourist destination and as a destination for the hosting of major events,
(b) to promote travel to and within New South Wales,
(c) to promote major events,
(d) to identify, attract and procure major events for New South Wales,
(e) to develop tourism ventures,
(f) to implement strategic plans, as approved by the Minister from time to time, relating to the development of tourism and the procurement of major events,
(g) to prepare, at least 3 months before the beginning of each financial year of Destination NSW, a corporate and business plan for the financial year for approval by the Minister,
(h) to prepare, on such occasions as the Board requires, an operational plan for approval by the Board,
(i) to construct, establish, maintain and operate tourist facilities,
(j) to establish, maintain and conduct enterprises relating to tourism,
(k) to provide travel and information services relating to tourism,
(l) to market travel and related services,
(m) to carry out (or arrange for the carrying out of) research in relation to tourism and major events. (10)

Destination NSW was also the major investor in Business Events Sydney (BE Sydney) a not-for-profit organisation seeking to secure international and domestic conventions, incentive travel reward programs, corporate events and exhibitions for Sydney and regional NSW. (11)

On 29 March 2021 under Administrative Orders, Destination NSW was transferred into Investment NSW within the Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPC). (12)

From 1 April 2022, the Administrative Arrangements transferred Destination NSW (within Investment NSW) from DPC to the newly formed Department of Enterprise, Investment and Trade, and Investment NSW ceased to be the employing agency of staff in Destination NSW. (13)

On 1 April 2024 the Destination NSW Staff Agency was abolished and the persons employed were transferred to the Department of Enterprise, Investment and Trade. (14)
