Full description

In 1995, the NSW Government embarked on a restructuring of the electricity generation and distribution sectors. On 1 October 1995, as part of a reduction in the number of electricity distributors, MetSouth Energy was created by proclamation under the Electricity Act 1945. (1) On the same day, the interests and immovable assets of Prospect Electricity and Illawarra Electricity were transferred to MetSouth. (2)

The new agency was responsible for the distribution of electricity in the following districts: Baulkham Hills, Blacktown, Blue Mountains, Camden, Campbelltown, Fairfield, Hawkesbury, Holroyd, Kiama, Liverpool, Parramatta, Penrith, Shellharbour, Shoalhaven, Wingecarribee, Wollondilly, and Wollongong. (3)

Between October 1995 and February 1996, Prospect Electricity and Illawarra Electricity continued to exist as legal entities. The Electricity (Amalgamation of Electricity Distributors) Regulation 1995 provided that a former distributor would not be dissolved until all of its “staff, assets, rights and liabilities” had been transferred to a new body. (4) The two organisations' remaining assets were not formally transferred to MetSouth until 29 February 1996 (5) so, until that time, they continued to operate, holding joint board meetings. (6)

At its meeting on 26 October 1995, the joint Board approved a proposal to adopt, for MetSouth Energy, the trading name “Integral Energy Australia”. (7) The organisation launched its new name and logo on 5 February 1996. (8)

On 1 March 1996, MetSouth Energy was reconstituted as a State Owned Corporation via the new Energy Services Corporations Act 1995 under the provisions of State Owned Corporations Act 1989. (9) On 24 May 1996, the corporation was formally re-named Integral Energy Australia by regulation. (10)

On 1 March 2011, the sale of Integral Energy Australia's retail business and brand to Origin Energy was completed. (11) The following day, the organisation, now a network-only business, was renamed Endeavour Energy by regulation under the Energy Services Corporations Act 1995. (12)

In 2017, Endeavour Energy described itself as a ‘poles and wires’ business responsible for the supply of electricity to 2.4 million people in households and businesses across Sydney's Greater West, the Blue Mountains, Southern Highlands, the Illawarra and the South Coast. (13)

On the 2 June 2017, under the Electricity Retained Interest Corporations Act 2015 allowing part of the retained interest that was referrable to the State-Owned Corporation Endeavour Energy’s distribution system was constituted to have the corporate name “Electricity Retained Interest Corporation - Endeavour Energy”. (14) Endeavour Energy ceased to be a State-owned Corporation under the State-Owned Corporations Act 1989 and an energy services corporation under the Energy Services Corporations Act 1995. (15)
