Tumbarumba was constituted as a Shire on 7 March 1906, under the Local Government (Shires) Act, 1905 (Act No.33, 1905). This Act provided for a Temporary Council of up to five members who, within six months, were obliged to make the necessary preparations for the election of the first Council. (1)
Tumbarumba's Temporary Shire Councillors were: Thomas Bell of Courabyra; Ralph Cottam and Bago; Robert Levis of Rosewood; Adam Standish Livingstone of Courabyra, near Tumbarumba; and Peter James McMeekin of Ournie, Upper Murray. (2)
In September 1906, the first temporary Tumbarumba Shire Council meeting was held. Those in attendance were John Mitchell and David Langlands. (3) In January 1907, the first full Council met and consisted of: Mitchell, Langlands, Livingstone, McMeekin, Beil and McMicking. (4)
The Shire boundaries included much of the County of Selwyn, and parts of the Counties of Wynyard and Buccleuch. The township of Tumbarumba came under the control of an urban committee. (5)
The Tumbarumba Shire Council dealt with matters such as: public works, subdivisions, housing, road and bridge maintenance, local business, sanitary and garbage concerns, and public recreational areas.
Tumbarumba Shire Council was amalgamated with Tumut Shire Council on 12 May 2016 to form Snowy Valleys Council. (6)
