Leslie Nott Afforestation Camp, Laurel Hill was established on 18 March 1957 by the Governor's proclamation under the Prisons Act 1952. The camp comprised an area of about 750 acres of land. (1) The purpose of the Afforestation camps was to provide prisoners with a modified form of prison life and the opportunity to acquire skills which could be used on release. Prisoners carried out tree-planting and related activities. (2) The daily average number of prisoners in the camp between 1970-1974 was 60, or a total of 228 per year (3) In 1979 the Leslie Nott Aforestation Camp was connected with Brookfield Afforestation Camp, Manus and in Annual reports after this year these two camps were together known as Afforestation Camps Manus/Laurel Hill. The camps accommodated prisoners of the "C" category. (4) The Camp was deproclaimed by the Governor's Proclamation from 7 June 1995.
