Full description

The Government Real Estate Branch was established by April 1967 as part of the Housing Commission of New South Wales. (1)

The function of the Real Estate Branch was to administer properties on behalf of State Government Departments and authorities other than the Housing Commission, and to negotiate terms and conditions for the lease of office accommodation for State Government departments and instrumentalities. (2)

The Housing Act (No. 163, 1985) came into operation from 1 January, 1986, establishing the Department of Housing (3) and the New South Wales Land and Housing Corporation. (4)

By 1987 the functions of the Government Real Estate Branch were expanded to include acquisition and disposal of vacant land and leases of shops. (5)

In 1988 the branch was transferred from the Department of Housing to the Department of Administrative Services. (6) In 1989 the functions of the branch were incorporated into a new Property Management Division within the Department of Administrative Services. (7)
