Energy Administration Act, 1987 (Act No.103,1987) established a Department of Energy to commence on 1 July, 1987 (1) . The Department was created in lieu of the Energy Authority of New South Wales. The role of the Department was as follows: a) advising the Minister for Energy on the location, development extraction, transportation, distribution, conservation and utilisation of energy resources in the State; b) participating in and encouraging research and development relating to existing and new sources of energy and energy substitution; c) promoting and regulating the coordination, development and distribution of electricity supply throughout the State; d) providing advice to electricity distributing authorities on such matters as the framing and regulating of retail electricity tariffs, e) implementing safety regulations relating to consumers’ installations; f) licensing electrical mechanics and electrical contractors.· The Department was not responsible for the generation or supply of electricity."(2) The Department of Energy was abolished and its functions were assumed by the new Department of Minerals and Energy on 19th October 1988(3) FOOTNOTES (1)New South Wales Government Gazette No.109, 26 June 1987, p.3180 (2)New South Wales Yearbook, 1988, p.365 (3)New South Wales Government Gazette No.158, 19 October 1988 p.5481
