The immediate precursor to the establishment of the Forestry Department was the Royal Commission of Inquiry on Forestry which was established on 15 July, 1907 and submitted its final report on 29 October, 1908. (1) The Royal Commissioners were A. Kethel, William Freeman and J.A. Curtis. The Forestry Act, 1909 (Act No 6, 1909) established a Forestry Department with a Director of Forests and other officers.(2) Richard Dalrymple Hay was the first Director of Forests appointed on 1 January, 1910, and remained in the office until 1916. The Forestry Department was abolished by the Forestry Act, 1916 which also established the Forestry Commission. FOOTNOTES: (1) NSW Parliamentary Papers 1908 Second Session.
