The Wollongong Court of General and Quarter Sessions was established by proclamation in NSW Government Gazette dated 12 July, 1859. The date of the first hearings appears to be 1 November, 1859. (1) The Courts of General and Quarter Sessions were arranged into Districts. The Wollongong Court of General and Quarter Sessions was placed in the Cumberland and Coast District where it remained until 1865. The court was placed in the Metropolitan and Coast District from 1865 - 1870; from 1871-1902 in the Southern [I] District; from 1903-1954 in the Southern and Hunter District; from 1955 - 1973 in the Southern [II] District. The role of the Court of Quarter Sessions was to hear less serious criminal cases. The dates of hearings at the Wollongong Court of General and Quarter Sessions were proclaimed in the NSW Government Gazette. The Court ceased on 1 July 1973 when Courts of General and Quarter Sessions were abolished and the district courts took on the criminal as well as the civil jurisdiction. Wollongong Court of General and Quarter Sessions became a court in the District Court Criminal and Special Jurisdiction, Illawarra Division. Endnotes:
