Full description

The Parramatta Court of General and Quarter Sessions was established by Proclamation in the NSW Government Gazette 21 March, 1832 p.27. The first date of hearings was apparently 3 April 1832. Initially there was no district structure of the Court which met as required to hear less serious criminal matters. When the Courts of General and Quarter Sessions were arranged into districts in 1858 (1) the Parramatta Court was placed in the Cumberland and Coast District. The Court was transferred to the Metropolitan and Coast District in 1865 where it remained until 1877. From 1878 until 1890 the Court was within the Metropolitan and Hunter District; from 1891 until 1902 within the Metropolitan, Suburban and Hunter District; from 1903 until 1913 within the Western District; from 1914 until 1917 within the South-Western District; from 1918 until 1954 within the Western District and from 1955 until 1971 in a separate Parramatta District. The Court did not sit in 1972 and it was not immediately continued as a Court in the Criminal and Special Jurisdiction of the District Court. The role of the Court of General and Quarter Sessions was to hear less serious criminal cases. The dates of hearings at the Parramatta Court were proclaimed in the NSW Government Gazette. Endnotes:
