Full description

The Goulburn Court of General and Quarter Sessions was established by 26 October, 1847 (1). The Courts of General and Quarter Sessions were arranged into districts. The Goulburn Court began in the Southern District [I] until it was transferred to the Southern and Hunter District in 1902 until 1908. From 1909 until 1954 Goulburn Court was placed in the South-Western District, from 1955 until 1966 in the Southern District [II] and from 1967 was in the Western District where it stayed until the system of Quarter Sessions was discontinued. The role of the Court of Quarter Sessions was to hear less serious criminal cases. The dates of hearings at the Goulburn Court were proclaimed in the NSW Government Gazette. The court ceased on 1 July 1973 when Courts of General and Quarter Sessions were abolished and the district courts took on the Criminal as well as the civil jurisdiction. Goulburn Court of General and Quarter Sessions became a Court in the District Court Criminal and Special Jurisdiction South and South-Western Division. Endnotes:
