The Cooma Court of General and Quarter Sessions was established by proclamation in the Government Gazette 12 July 1859. The first date of hearings was proclaimed as 12 September 1859. (1) Initially, Cooma was placed in the Cumberland and Coastal District (2) but was transferred to the Southern District[I] in 1861 (3) until 1902. In 1903 the Court was transferred to the Southern and Hunter District where it remained until 1954 (4). From 1955 until 1966 the Court was placed in the Southern District [II] (5), from 1967 until 1969 in the South Western District (6) and transferred back to the Southern District [II] in 1969 where it remained until 1973 (7) when Courts of General and Quarter Sessions were abolished and the district courts took on the criminal as well as the civil jurisdiction. Cooma Court of General and Quarter Sessions became a court in the District Criminal and Special Jurisdiction South and South West Division. The role of the Court of Quarter Sessions was to hear less serious criminal cases. The dates of hearings at the Cooma Court were proclaimed in the NSW Government Gazette. Endnotes:
