The Experimental Farms and Stations Branch was established on 1 November 1950. (1) The branch had developmental and operational responsibilities for the facilities at the research farms and stations maintained by the Department of Agriculture. (2)

In 1964 the Experimental Farms and Stations Branch name was changed to the Research Stations Branch. (3)

By 1968, the functions of the Branch appear to have expanded to include: supervision and maintenance of plant at research stations, co-ordinating the Departmental Capital Works program, supervising the Architects Branch, maintenance of the Western Division Public Watering places, and development and co-ordination of the agricultural machinery advisory service. In 1968 the responsibility for the Drought Relief Scheme was also added to the Research Stations Branch (4)

In 1970 the Research Station Branch was renamed the Division of Research Stations. (5)

In 1972 the Division became known as the Division of Research Services. (6) Responsibility for the administration of Drought Relief scheme and public watering places was transferred to the Division of Animal Industries. The Research co-ordinators section was transferred from the Division of Extension Services to the Division of Research Services. (7)

In late 1980 the Division of Extension Services was amalgamated with the Division of Research Services to form the Division of Research and Advisory Services. (8)
