The Court of Arbitration was formed in accordance with the Industrial Arbitration Act, 1901. (Act No. 59, 1901) The purpose of the Court was to hear and determine industrial disputes. The Court comprised a President and two members.(1) The President was required to be a judge of the Supreme Court, the other two members being representatives of employers and employees respectively.(2) The first President and delegates commenced their three-year terms on 1 April 1902 (3) The Court had jurisdiction over industrial disputes as well as any industrial matter referred to it and could make any order or award as the result of a hearing.(4) This Act applied only to industrial units or unions as defined under the act.
