Full description
Various coroners were appointed from the commencement of the Colony to inquire into the circumstances of certain classes of deaths. Coroners were classified as belonging to the 'Judicial Establishment' and later as the 'Law Officers of the Crown'.By 1892 (most likely considerably earlier) there was a branch, sub-branch or business unit in the Attorney General's Department known as 'coroners' which was the office of the City Coroner and his support staff that kept statistics of the Sydney Metropolitan coroners and details of the incumbents in other country New South Wales. Some records relating to the coronial function throughout the Colony / State were maintained centrally and it is postulated that they were held in the Coroner's Branch. (1) At some date between 1938 and 1946 the branch appears to have been absorbed into the Petty Sessions Branch. (2)
