In September 1953, on the recommendation of the Director General of Education, a representative committee was established to carry out a survey on secondary education in New South Wales and make proposals as to the further development of secondary education in Departmental schools.(1) The terms of reference for the Committee were to survey and report upon the provision of full-time day education for adolescents in New South Wales and, in particular, to examine the objectives, organisation and content of the courses provided for adolescent pupils in the public schools of the State, with regard to the requirements of a good general education and to the desirability of providing a variety of curricula adequate to meet the varying aptitudes and abilities of the pupils concerned. The Committee first met in April 1954, and submitted it's report on 28 October 1957.(2) Endnotes
